Wake by Amanda Hocking
Gorgeous. Fearless. Dangerous. They're the kind of girls you envy; the kind of girls you want to hate. Strangers in town for the summer, Penn, Lexi and Thea have caught everyone's attention—but it’s Gemma who’s attracted theirs. She’s the one they’ve chosen to be part of their group.
Gemma seems to have it all—she’s carefree, pretty, and falling in love with Alex, the boy next door. He’s always been just a friend, but this summer they’ve taken their relationship to the next level, and now there’s no going back. Then one night, Gemma’s ordinary life changes forever. She’s taking a late night swim under the stars when she finds Penn, Lexi and Thea partying on the cove. They invite her to join them, and the next morning she wakes up on the beach feeling groggy and sick, knowing something is different.
Suddenly Gemma is stronger, faster, and more beautiful than ever. But her new powers come with a terrifying price. And as she uncovers the truth, she’s is forced to choose between staying with those she loves—or entering a new world brimming with dark hungers and unimaginable secrets.
My Rating : 4 of 5 stars
My Thoughts : I have previously read Amanda Hocking’s Trylle Trilogy and only thing I can say is Wake is way better and mature than any of her previous novel. It has suspense, a equal paced gripping plot and three evil sirens (forget anything you know about little mermaid). Wake is a part mythology and part fantasy novel that completely engrossed me from the beginning.
They are beautiful, fearless and deadly. Penn, Lexy and Thea have something creepy and dangerous about them. As all had their eyes on these three girls, they had laid their eyes on a certain girl Gemma, because they wanted her as a replace of their dead siren sister.
Gemma is pretty, smart and with a passion for water, with a caring sister Harper and a perfect next door boyfriend Alex. But her life changed after the night Gemma went partying with these three girls and found next day she was found lying unconscious on the beach. Suddenly Gemma is beautiful, faster and stronger than ever. Soon she discovers the truth behind her change and new mythical power she has got but everything she has got with a price to pay which might cost the lives of those she loves most, even the life of her own.
I love reading novels based on sea creatures and when the creature are turned out to be evil, I love reading them more. Thea, Lexi and Penn literally gave me creeps, especially Penn, the worst and bitchy of the three.
The book was told from third person narration, and point of view of Haper and Gemma. I loved Gemma as a protagonist but she was a little weak comparative to her elder sister Harper. Gemma is beautiful and smart but confused few times, where Harper is exactly kind of girl I love to read about. She is caring, protective and smart, and the author did a brilliant job by including a strong sisterly tie that binds Gemma and Harper.I loved Alex, all cute next door boy, loving and caring, a little nerd, but he charmed me, so did Daniel, I enjoyed his witty lines and different personality.
I loved Wake, the book has successful to held my attention from the beginning. Turing of events and few twists, Wake is best work of Amanda Hocking so far. Also there is an interesting mythological story on the origins of sirens, and needless to say I’m sucker of mythology so it worked on me like a spell.
I’m happy that we don’t have to wait much for the next book to be released and I have already started counting days. All I can say Wake was a wonderful and entreating reading for me and I enjoyed the whole story.
